The HR Headaches (Do any of these sound familiar?)
My marketing team and I brainstormed the most common HR problems clients face. What we realised is that the same issues keep coming up, so I’m sharing them here in case they strike a chord with you, too!
These are the challenges business owners and managers most frequently ask me for help with:
Unclear probation periods
Particularly when a new hire isn’t working out, and there’s uncertainty around whether (and how) they can be let go. I find this is commonly connected to poor recruitment decisions at the outset.
Recruitment mistakes
Hiring the wrong person due to hurried processes, unclear job specifications, or relying on “gut feel” rather than structured selection.
Sickness absence and self-certification confusion
Many employers don’t fully understand how self-certification works, what they can ask for, or how to manage short- and long-term sickness fairly and legally.
Employee dynamics and poor accountability
When roles, responsibilities, and expectations aren’t clear, friction builds and performance drops.
Performance reviews that don’t work
Either they don’t happen at all, or they’re tick-box exercises that avoid honest conversations and meaningful outcomes.
Incorrect or outdated contracts
Contracts that no longer reflect the business, the role, or current employment law. This is a big risk that frequently escapes attention.
Pay disputes
Because of misunderstandings about overtime and bonuses, there are inconsistencies that lead to resentment and mistrust.
High staff turnover
Costly, disruptive, and often a symptom of core difficulties with culture, management, or recruitment.
Poor attitudes and behavioural issues
A single negative attitude can quickly undermine team spirit and output if left unchecked.
Attendance and lateness problems
Often tolerated for too long, until they become “the norm” and harder to challenge.
Managing staff with disabilities
Employers want to do the right thing yet feel unsure about reasonable adjustments, their legal responsibilities, and how to have the right conversations.
So, what’s your HR headache?
If you’re reading this and relating to this, you’re not alone. Most of these issues don’t start as “big problems,” but they grow into huge problems because they’re avoided, misunderstood, or handled inconsistently.
The real question is:
What are you doing about it?
Getting HR right protects your business, supports your people, and ensures workplace issues are managed early before they get worse.
If one of these problems is keeping you awake at night, don’t wait any longer! Pick up the phone or email and get in touch straightaway and let’s start resolving it together.
